On Tuesday of the final week of Jesus’ ministry he spent time at the temple where he taught the listeners by telling parables. He also engaged in discussions with the religious leaders.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching and said, \u201cBy what authority are you doing these things? Who gave you this authority?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus answered them, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will also ask you one question, and if you answer it for me, then I will tell you by what authority I do these things. Did John\u2019s baptism come from heaven, or was it of human origin?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

They discussed it among themselves, \u201cIf we say, \u2018From heaven,\u2019 he will say to us, \u2018Then why didn\u2019t you believe him?\u2009\u2019 But if we say, \u2018Of human origin,\u2019 we\u2019re afraid of the crowd, because everyone considers John to be a prophet.\u201d So they answered Jesus, \u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And he said to them, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do you think? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said, \u2018My son, go work in the vineyard today.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He answered, \u2018I will not,\u2019 but later he repented and went. Then the man went to the other and said the same thing. \u2018I will, sir,\u2019 he answered, but he didn\u2019t go. Which of the two did his father\u2019s will?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

They said, \u201cThe first.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus said to them, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Truly I tell you, tax collectors and prostitutes will enter the kingdom of God before you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you didn\u2019t believe him. Tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him; but you, when you saw it, didn\u2019t even change your minds then and believe him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Listen to another parable: There was a landowner, who planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a winepress in it, and built a watchtower. He leased it to tenant farmers and went away. When the time came to harvest fruit, he sent his servants to the farmers to collect his fruit. The farmers took his servants, beat one, killed another, and stoned a third. Again, he sent other servants, more than the first group, and they did the same to them. Finally, he sent his son to them. \u2018They will respect my son,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But when the tenant farmers saw the son, they said to each other, \u2018This is the heir. Come, let\u2019s kill him and take his inheritance.\u2019 So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those farmers?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

They told him, \u201cHe will completely destroy those terrible men, and lease his vineyard to other farmers who will give him his fruit at the harvest.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus said to them, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have you never read in the Scriptures: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stone that the builders rejected <\/p>\n\n\n\n

has become the cornerstone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is what the Lord has done <\/p>\n\n\n\n

and it is wonderful in our eyes?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they knew he was speaking about them. Although they were looking for a way to arrest him, they feared the crowds, because the people regarded him as a prophet. (Matthew 21:23-46)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
